Surface treatment: cold blacking...

1/ Cold blacking / BLACKFAST
IRON AND STEEL ROOM TEMPERATURE BLACKING

1

The modern solution for iron and steel blacking.

Ensures room temperature blacking of ferrous metals with less than 12% chrome , easily, without costly investment, economically, very quick, without dimensional changes, with a high level of safety. Can be carried out in all mechanical workshops, toolrooms even if not specialised in surface treatment.
You can black yourself !

Iron and steel blacking enables you to obtain a finish which has the following advantages:

9

No deposit:
Many machined parts are manufactured to a tight tolerance, which rules out deposits, plating and painting.

No dimensional change

Anticorrosion:
It is obtained thanks to the absorption of wax, oil or other anticorrosion agents by the blacked surface.

Iron and steel room temperature blacking.

The room temperature blacking process.BLACKFAST is a simple succession of 4 - 5 soakings. It is specially designed to be used in workshops .This process does not alter the dimensional aspect and allows you to obtain a uniform colouring on machined surfaces, wires and blind holes-the blacking is obtained by a chemical conversion of the metallic surface. The blacking process includes degreasing, immersion in a surface conditioner and in a blacking solution-the anti-corrosion protection is obtained by a final immersion in a dewatering oil.

A typical blacking line looks like this:

Aspect:
A lasting black finish improves the appearance of the parts and optimises a great number of manufactured articles.

Safety:
By reducing light glare from moving tooling, fatigue is reduced and operator safety increased.

2 / BLACKFAST, ROOM TEMPERATURE BLACKING PROCESS FOR IRON AND STEEL / EXPLICATIVE VIDEO

This video is built on a series of brief images showing 3 sizes of room temperature blacking lines as well as the products and equipment necessary to install the smallest of these lines Please note the following points.

Small volume Blackfast line (20 litres): A series of 20 litre tanks supported by a wooden work surface shows how easy this room temperature blacking treatment is for the occasional user. You only have to remove the covers and replace them afterwards. The water rinsing tanks are connected to the water mains to guarantee good results and some small parts are raised, being blacked in a basket which is handled manually.

Medium volume Blackfast line (150) A specially built line for soaked tool holders . The sanded parts are suspended individually and can be seen being immersed in hot degreasing solution and in the blacking tank .The very short oil soaking time is made possible by a prior soaking in a boiling water tank .This production method enables the doubling of the line productivity.

Large volume Blackfast line (700 litres) This semi-automatic production line processes 2-3 tonnes each day. Note the agitated nature of the rinsing water, the continuous filtration of the blacking, the overhead conveyor, the oil recovery area and the effortless way with which such a volume of parts can be processed efficiently with the Blackfast room temperature blacking process.

For the best BLACK finish-easily, in a sure manner, it's so easy with BLACKFAST -
YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF!

The video lasts 2 mn, 30 sec.

3/ Advantages compared to hot blacking:

BLACKFAST
HOT BLACKING
Operation at room temperature NO. at 140 °C
Low operation cost in terms of energy NO. High temperature heating + Maintenance cost
Safe and easy addition of chemicals NO. Adding water and chemicals implies precautions to avoid eruptions and splattering
Non-smoking baths NO. No extraction necessary
Immediately ready for use NO. It is necessary to heat to 140 °C
Low investment NO. Tanks, heating, extractions = expensive
No heat distortion NO. Distortion possible
Easy to set up NO. Require power, services, extractions
Blackens cast iron NO. Creates a red / brown finish

4/ BLACKFAST installation for small volumes (25 litre tanks ):

26

1
  • Dedicate a permanent site near the factory
  • Organise running water and used water drainage
  • Install the tanks at a comfortable working height
  • Installation cost : 700 to 1000 €
  • Operational cost : 16 to 20 cents by Kg
  • Possible workload : 150 - 200 Kg/ week

5/ BLACKFAST installation for large volumes (700 litre tanks):

5

78
  • Improved output: hot degreasing, soaked in hot water
  • Heavy load handling: hoist
  • Sanding / acid cleaning: for hardened steel, rusty, unmachined...
  • Improved water rinsing: compressed air agitation
  • Filtering : from the blacking bath ( 50 µ filter )
  • Investment cost : 16000 - 24000 €uros
  • Operational cost : 13 - 16 cents / Kg
  • Possible saving compared to hot blacking : 10000 to 13000 €
